After four previous occasions where a group of Maltese ceramists exhibited jointly with another group of ceramists from Cyprus. in Mdina (2004) and Valletta (2008) and in Larnaka (2004 and 2007), another group exhibition of works by artists from the two Mediterranean islands is set to take place at the Upper Galleries of the St. James Cavalier Centre of Valletta, from September 12 to October 25.

Growing from a small exhibition organized by a group of 6 ceramists from each island, the idea took off with immediate success and was received enthusiastically by ceramists on both countries. This exhibition features 81works by 27 ceramists, who work with diverse ceramic media, like earthenware, stoneware and raku, and use different techniques, styles and expressions.

Ceramic sculpture by Paul HaberThe Malta/Cyprus Ceramics Exhibition has been organized on the initiative of Maltese artists Charles Sammut and Mario Sammut. Working from their base at The Sculptor’s Lodge in Buskett, and assisted by Antoine Paul Camilleri and Sina Farrugia, the group managed to bring together a number of their ceramist friends from Malta and Cyprus. Together with Cypriot ceramists from The Cyprus Ceramists and Potters Association headed by Vassos Demetriou and Efthymios Symeou, they are presenting a show of the best modern ceramics produced on the two islands that have a long tradition in the craft.

Ceramic mural exhibited by George MuscatWith the aim of furthering dialogue and exchanging of ideas between these ceramists, the ceramists from Cyprus will be travelling to Malta for the opening of this exhibition as has been done in previous occasions, whereby the Maltese ceramists had also been present for the inauguration of the exhibitions in Cyprus.

If you are a lover of clay and the art of pottery this is the perfect opportunity to see some of the bes craftsmen from the only two island-states of the European south.
