Bulgaria’s second largest city and main seaside resort on the Black Sea coast, has a long tradition as an important cultural centre in the Balkans. Its population of 350 thousand enjoys a rich cultural scene of festivals, exhibitions and performing arts. One of the city’s key institutions is the 51 year old Opera House, which presents each year a repertoire that is broad and far reaching but at the same time it still has its roots firmly planted in opera heritage.

Since 1947 there have been over 200 productions and 7,000 performances seen by over 3 million spectators. Varna Opera began to receive universal acclaim within two years of its opening with the 1949 production of Madam Butterfly. Since then there have been successful productions from many different genres ranging from works by Rossini and Mozart to modern musicals and ballet productions like Spartacus and Arabian Nights.

DuelThis year, the Varna Opera Theatre opens the new season with a rich programme of operas, operettas, children’s operas, musicals, ballet and concerts that cannot be ignored. The season runs from June 2008 until the end of July 2009.

If you happen to visit the city you cannot miss the Varna Opera Theatre, conveniently situated downtown amid plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and many notable landmarks. Just buy a surprisingly low cost ticket for one of the productions on offer and have a ball.
