Leticia Muñoz Moreno Having established a world-wide reputation for its commitment to excellence and for promoting classical music in Cyprus, the Pharos Arts Foundation in Nicosia is the island’s main center for quality music today. With more than 150 world class concerts over the last ten years and numerous outstanding musicians performing in the Concert Series and the annual Chamber Music Festival, the 2009/2010 winter program announced comes with no surprises. From December to the end of February 2010 expect only the best: Four unique concerts that should not be missed!

Alexander Chaushian The “concert” of December 8 is actually a film screening that brings on the silver screen Enrique Sánchez Lansch’s The Promise of Music, a documentary that follows the famed Venezuelan Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra as it prepares to perform in Bonn, Germany. On January 24, do not miss Yevgeny Sudbin playing the piano in a concert to be remembered. He is followed by the Winter Trio of Leticia Muñoz Moreno (violin), Alexander Chaushian (cello) and Polina Leschenko (piano) on February 7, while three weeks later, on February 26, the famed Ensemble Intercontemporain from France performs for the first time in Cyprus.

The Promise of Music
The Promise of Music chronicles conductor Gustavo Dudamel and his work with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela as they prepare for a life-changing performance in Germany. This intimate 90-minute documentary with English subtitles delves into the daily lives of the gifted youngsters, examining the effects of classical music study on their personalities, and on their outlook for the future. The film is directed by Enrique Sánchez Lansch (director of the award-winning Rhythm Is It), and follows Dudamel as he prepares his orchestra in Caracas for its concert in Bonn. The film also features comments by such distinguished musicians as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Yevgeny Sudbin piano recital
Yevgeny Sudbin is already hailed as potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century, His recordings have met with overwhelming critical acclaim. The International Record Review stated that Sudbin's Rachmaninov recording "confirms him as one of the most important pianistic talents of our time." Sudbin has appeared with many of the world's most distinguished orchestras and performed at music festivals throughout the world. Born in St. Petersburg in 1980, Yevgeny Sudbin displayed exceptional musical talents from an early age and in 1987 entered the Specialist Music School of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1990 he continued his studies in Berlin and then moved to London where he has lived since 1997. Additionally, he attended the International Piano Foundation at Lake Como, Italy.

An evening with Leticia Muñoz Moreno (violin), Alexander Chaushian (cello) and Polina Leschenko (piano).
Leticia Muñoz Moreno is one of the most sought after violinists of her generation. Equally praised by audiences and critics for her exquisite musicality and expressivity, Leticia has been catching the attention of today’s most important conductors. Armenian-born Alexander Chaushian is regarded as one of the finest cellists of the younger generation. He has performed extensively throughout the world and is a highly accomplished performer. Russian pianist Polina Leschenko was born into a family of musicians and began playing the piano at the age of 6. She combines a phenomenal technique with deep sensitivity and abundant imagination. Her busy career combines concerti, recitals and chamber music.

Leticia Muñoz Moreno

Ensemble Intercontemporain
In 1976, Pierre Boulez founded the Ensemble Intercontemporain with the support of Michel Guy, who was Minister of Culture at the time. The Ensemble’s 31 soloists share a passion for 20th-21st century music and are employed on permanent contract, enabling them to fulfill the major aims of the Ensemble: performance, creation and education for young musicians and the general public. Under the artistic direction of Susanna Mälkki, the musicians work in close collaboration with composers, exploring instrumental techniques and developing projects that interweave music, dance, theater, film, video and visual arts. Based at the Cité de la Musique (Paris) since 1995, the Ensemble performs and records in France and abroad, taking part in major festivals worldwide.
