With ninety films onscreen, the Cinemania festival in Sofia is today one of the country’s most significant cinema events running every year this season for two weeks. This year’s 23rd edition, opens November 13 with Carlos Saura’s most latest production I, Don Giovanni, an elegant retelling of the story behind the creation of one of Mozart’s operatic masterpieces.
Screenings in five of Sofia’s cinema theatres (Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture, Euro Cinema, Odeon, Kino Liumier and Dom na kinoto) run until December 3.
Part of the programme will be on the silver screen of Plovdiv’s Lucky Cinema from 12 to 30 of November.

Cinemania started in 1987 as a World Film Panorama. From the very beginning, this film forum became a real vogue among Bulgarian spectators, with the most attractive and significant productions worldwide included in its program. After the democratic change in the country in 1991, the distribution system was radically changed and private distributing companies, Bulgarian representatives in Hollywood’s major companies and independent film distributors emerged.
So, just as the regular film placard became richer and more varied, the film panorama got a new name: Cinemania. |

Today, Cinemania presents remarkable films, most of which stay out of the Bulgarian film distributors’ interests for some reason. This year, apart from some Bulgarian films, expect to see films from the independent American cinema and Asia, as well as new and older productions from the UK, Russia, Spain, Italy, France and Germany. There are also special sections for Musicals, Documentaries and Children’s Cinema, while Cinemania’s best is kept in the section Festival of Festivals!
The idea behind Cinemania is to offer Bulgarian spectators in two weeks the most essential films of the last 2-3 years that made a sensation in film festivals around the world.
