New season at the Royal Danish Theatre

A busy program of 13 operas, 9 ballet productions and 11 concerts

Nine premieres of entirely newly created musical drama, reaching from the spectacular to the intimate and from the classical to the avant-garde are on offer in this Royal Danish Opera 2009/10 season. The ballet menu for this season includes nine wide-ranging and sharply focused productions, embracing everything from grand historical masterpieces to pure abstract neo-classicism, from the lyrically romantic to the demandingly modern, from showbiz to artistic stringency. What unites the exciting new productions at Copenhagen’s Opera House is their high ambition of presenting audiences with quality experiences every single evening –performances that amaze, seduce and give rise to thought. The 2009/10 season embraces a wide choice of works from across Europe –from Germany and Italy, but also from Russia, Denmark, England, France and Austria. European history and identity lies at the core of this year’s opera repertoire.

With the inauguration of the new Jean Nouvel-designed concert hall, Koncerthuset, the Danish capital now takes centre stage within symphonic music along with the greatest of European musical cities –a truly unique venue that invokes in everyone who visits it a sense of awe and great expectation. It is therefore natural that the six concerts of the upcoming season of the Royal Danish Orchestra –four great symphonic concerts and two chamber concerts– are hosted at Koncerthuset, located in Copenhagen’s new multimedia town, DR Byen. This season also sees a new constellation of chamber concerts at Takkelloftet featuring members of the Royal Danish Orchestra. For the first time, members of the Royal Danish Opera Chorus will perform all Brahms’ Liebeslieder-Walzer in the acoustically regal venue at the Opera House.
