Creating art out of absolute emptiness is what Maltese designer and artist Jean Karl Izzo does best and this is what he wants us to witness in his first solo show hosted at the Upper Galleries of the St James Cavalier Centre in Valletta. Izzo’s exhibition, titled Il Suono del Silenzio, meaning 'The Sound of Silence', will be on show from November 6 to December 13, featuring works on canvas, board and paper with the use of paint and mixed media that reflect his ideas developed within the past four years.

Canal con BarcheThe artist gives value to empty spaces. The spaces in Izzo’s art constitute the main attribute to create that unique element of identity immediately beyond the threshold of the exposition gallery. With this action, viewers find themselves in a dimension where everything is part of the infinite artistic universe. Even spaces become an intrinsic element of the artistic process, from the space around the works of art, to the entire environment surrounding the spectators. The aura of the expositive space, with its own particular history and the artists living presence in the building can only enrich and complement this upcoming exhibition.

My works are the result of an artistic expression where art is truly free; where the forms play with each other and the colour and texture transmit different emotions; where art and nature embrace, undressed from the unessential,” says the artist

Composizione megaliticaIn some of Izzo’s works, the form is developed individually (in 3D) and then juxtaposed to another form or line on the canvas. By using this technique, the artist adds character and gives a life and different perception to and about the form. In this way Izzo also gets to know his forms and spaces better and bond with them. Jackson Pollock said ‘the painting has a life of its own’ and in this case the forms created by Izzo from spaces, have a life of their own.

This series of works of art is a result of a minimal artistic approach where the artist strips down detail from nature, architecture and landscapes, leaving us with the essential: line, colour, and form, to create these reductive yet complex works of art.
